Nordic Ecolabel environmental certification:

The Nordic Ecolabel

In addition to guaranteeing that the cotton and wool are grown organically without the use of pesticides and hand-picked, the certification also ensures adherence to the very strict requirements regarding dyes and chemicals permitted in production.

Criteria for certification and use of the Nordic Ecolabel:

Textiles that bear the Nordic Ecolabel may not use the following in dye and treatment processes:

  • Formaldehyde, which can cause allergies and cancer.
  • The heavy metals chromium, cobalt, nickel, copper, cadmium, antimony, arsenic, lead and mercury, which can cause damage to the nervous system and internal organs.
  • Special dyes (aryl amines), which are known or suspected of being carcinogenic. These amines can be split from special azo dyes and pigments, and are found in certain polyurethane (PU) materials.
  • Certain chlorinated benzenes and toluenes (including chloro-organic carriers, which are chemicals used to aid textile dyeing), which can damage internal organs.
  • The tin-organic preservatives and pesticides TBT and DBT, which are suspected to be endocrine disrupting and can damage fertility.
  • Pesticides (products for combating pests, weeds and microorganisms) and defoliation agents that can damage the nervous system and internal organs and can also be endocrine disrupting.
  • The phenols, PCB and 2,3,4,5,6-TeCP, which are used as preservatives and can damage the nervous system and internal organs.
  • Chemical residues with acidic or basic pH values, as these can irritate the skin. Phthalates may not be used in products with close contact to the skin.
  • Phthalates are found in softeners in PVC materials and are suspected of being harmful to fertility.
  • Wastewater from dye and treatment processes may not contain any form of harmful waste.

In other words:

Every lot of organic yarn in cotton and wool must have a GOTS certificate (International organisation that controls and guarantees the yarn is grown organically).

In regard to dye and treatment processes at the dye works, there are six unannounced visits per year from an external laboratory that takes 24-hour wastewater tests to control that no prohibited chemicals are used and that no form of heavy metals or other harmful waste is emitted into the wastewater that is returned to nature.

Additional requirements for the Nordic Ecolabel:

A detailed plan must be in place for reducing water and energy consumption in all production processes.
